Temptation of Jesus

1. Then Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

2 He went without food for forty days and forty nights, and later He was hungry. [Exod. 34:28; I Kings 19:8.]

3 And the tempter came and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.

6 “Since you are God’s Son, throw yourself down; for it is written, I will command my angels concerning you, and they will take you up in their hands so that you won’t hit your foot on a stone.“

7 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Don’t try to test the Lord your God!’”

8 Finally, the devil took Jesus up on a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms on earth and their power.

9 The devil told him, “I will give all this to you if you bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus answered, “Go away, Satan! The Scriptures say: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’

11 The Adversary let him alone, and angels came and took care of him.

A Light Has Risen

12 And when Jesus had heard that John had been handed over, he withdrew into Galilee.

13 He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.

14 that that might be fulfilled, which was spoken through Esaias the prophet, saying,

15 Land of Zabulon and the land of Nephthalim, the way of the sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles:

16 They are like people who are living in the dark. They live in the shadow that death brings. God will send a light to shine on them.’

17 From that time, Jesus began to tell people his message: “Change your hearts and lives because God’s Kingdom is now very near.

Calling of the First Disciples

18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

19 “Come and follow me, and I will teach you how to catch people,” he told them.

20 They dropped their nets right then and became his followers.

21. He went on and saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were getting their nets ready in their boat with their father, Zebedee.

22 Jesus called them, and at once, they left the boat and their father and went with him.

Spreading the Good News in Galilee

23 Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the Good News about the Kingdom, and healing people with all kinds of diseases and sickness.

24 The news about Jesus spread throughout Syria. People brought him everyone who was sick, those who suffered from any disease or pain. They also brought people with epilepsy, those who were paralyzed, and people possessed by demons, and he cured them all.

25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judæa, and beyond Jordan.
