Theme: Finding Spiritual Nourishment in Christ
Key Scripture: John 6:35
“Have you ever been in a completely dark room when suddenly someone turns on a flashlight?
For a moment, the darkness may feel overwhelming. You may not know where you are going or what is around you. But as soon as that small light appears, everything begins to change. The light may not illuminate the entire world, but it gives you enough visibility to take the next step.
That is a powerful picture of what Jesus does in our lives.
There are moments when life can feel like darkness. We may experience fear, confusion, disappointment, loneliness, uncertainty, or even a loss of direction. Sometimes we may ask, ‘Where do I go from here?’ or ‘How can I find my way through this situation?’
But Jesus made a remarkable declaration in John 8:12:
‘I am the light of the world.’
Jesus did not simply say that He gives light. He declared that He is the Light.
And that means when we follow Jesus, we are not walking through life alone or without direction. He brings truth where there is confusion, hope where there is despair, and guidance where there is uncertainty.
To understand the depth of this statement, we need to look at the setting in which Jesus spoke these words.
In John chapter 8, Jesus was teaching in Jerusalem during the time surrounding the Feast of Tabernacles, also known as the Feast of Booths. This was one of the major Jewish festivals and was connected to remembering how God cared for Israel during their journey through the wilderness.
During this feast, light had significant symbolic importance. The celebration included impressive illumination in the temple area, reminding the people of God’s presence and His guidance of Israel.
Think about Israel in the wilderness. They had no modern roads, streetlights, or navigation systems. Yet God guided His people with His presence. According to Exodus 13, the Lord went before Israel in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
The light represented God’s guidance and presence.
So when Jesus stood among the people and declared, ‘I am the light of the world,’ His words carried enormous significance.
He was pointing people beyond physical light.
He was revealing something about who He is.
Jesus is the One who guides us.
Jesus is the One who reveals truth.
Jesus is the One who brings spiritual light into a dark world.
And Jesus invites us not simply to admire the light, but to follow Him.
John 8:12 continues by saying that whoever follows Jesus will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
What an incredible promise.
Notice the word ‘follows.’
Jesus does not merely offer us information. He calls us into a relationship with Him. He calls us to follow His teachings, trust His Word, walk in obedience, and allow His presence to direct our lives.
So today, as we explore ‘I Am the Light of the World,’ I want you to ask yourself one important question:
Where do you need the light of Jesus in your life right now?
Is it in your family?
Is it in your decision-making?
Is it in your finances?
Is it in your relationships?
Is it in your spiritual life?
Perhaps you are facing a situation that you simply cannot understand.
Whatever darkness you may be facing, remember this truth:
Darkness does not overcome the light. When the light comes, darkness must give way.
Jesus is the Light of the World.
And today, He is inviting you to follow Him.”
Main Points: “I Am the Bread of Life” — John 6:35
1. Jesus Is the Source of Eternal Satisfaction
When Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life” in John 6:35, He was teaching that He alone can satisfy the deepest hunger of the human soul.
Physical hunger can be satisfied with food, but eventually we become hungry again. In the same way, many things we pursue in life can provide temporary satisfaction—money, success, possessions, relationships, recognition, entertainment, or achievements. Yet after obtaining these things, we may still discover an emptiness within us.
Jesus offers something different.
He says that the person who comes to Him will not hunger and the person who believes in Him will never thirst. The point is not that Christians will never experience physical hunger or difficult circumstances. Rather, Jesus is pointing to a deeper spiritual need—the need for reconciliation with God, meaning, hope, forgiveness, and eternal life.
Think about the Israelites in the wilderness. God provided manna from heaven to sustain them physically. But that bread could not give them eternal life.
Jesus uses this imagery to point to Himself.
He is greater than the manna.
He is the true Bread from heaven.
The world can offer temporary satisfaction, but Jesus satisfies the soul with a life that has eternal significance.
2. The Difference Between Physical Bread and the Bread of Life
Bread is one of the simplest examples of something that sustains physical life. When we are hungry, we eat, and our hunger is temporarily satisfied.
But physical bread has limitations.
We eat it today, and eventually we become hungry again. It provides physical nourishment, but it cannot address the deepest spiritual needs of the human heart.
Jesus uses bread as an illustration of something much greater.
Physical bread sustains the body temporarily. Jesus gives life that extends beyond this temporary world.
The crowd in John 6 had witnessed Jesus feed thousands of people with a small amount of food. They were interested in the miracle and the physical provision.
But Jesus wanted them to look beyond the miracle to the One who performed it.
They were seeking bread that would satisfy their stomachs.
Jesus was offering Himself—the Bread of Life—to satisfy their spiritual hunger.
This is an important lesson for us today.
We can become so focused on what God can give us that we forget to seek God Himself.
We may pray, “Lord, give me this job. Give me this opportunity. Solve this problem. Give me this possession.”
There is nothing wrong with bringing our needs to God. But Jesus calls us to something deeper: knowing Him, trusting Him, and making Him the center of our lives.
The greatest gift is not merely what Jesus can put into our hands.
The greatest gift is Jesus Himself.
3. How Do We “Feed” on Christ?
[Visual: Person praying, reading the Bible, and participating in communion.]
When we hear the phrase “feed on Christ,” we should understand it spiritually. Jesus is calling people to believe in Him, receive Him by faith, and depend upon Him as the source of spiritual life.
There are several practical ways we can continually draw closer to Him.
Through Prayer
Prayer is how we communicate with God.
When we pray, we bring our fears, questions, needs, thanksgiving, and desires before Him. We acknowledge that we cannot live spiritually independent of God.
You can begin each morning with a simple prayer:
“Lord Jesus, I need You today. Lead me, strengthen me, teach me, and help me walk according to Your Word.”
Prayer does not have to be complicated. What matters is approaching God sincerely and continually.
Through Scripture
If Jesus is the Bread of Life, then we need to continually nourish our minds and hearts with God’s Word.
The Bible reveals God’s character, His promises, His commands, His plan of salvation, and the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Instead of simply reading Scripture quickly, slow down and ask:
“What is God showing me through this passage?”
“What does this teach me about Jesus?”
“How should this change the way I live?”
John 6:35 can become a daily reminder:
Jesus is the Bread of Life.
When we meditate on His Word, we are reminded where our true source of life comes from.
Through Communion
Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is another important way Christians remember Christ and His sacrifice.
Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper with His disciples, using bread and wine to point them toward His body and blood and the new covenant.
Communion does not mean that ordinary physical bread is literally the same thing as Jesus. Rather, for Christians, it is a sacred remembrance of Christ’s death and the salvation accomplished through Him.
When believers participate in communion, they remember the Gospel:
Jesus gave Himself for us.
His sacrifice demonstrates God’s love.
His death points us to forgiveness.
His resurrection gives believers hope.
So when we come to the Lord’s Table, we are reminded again that our spiritual life depends completely upon Christ.
Bringing It All Together
Jesus said:
“I am the bread of life.” — John 6:35
This declaration teaches us three powerful truths:
Jesus satisfies the deepest spiritual hunger.
Jesus is greater than temporary physical provision.
Jesus calls us to continually depend upon Him through faith, prayer, Scripture, and remembrance of His sacrifice.
So ask yourself today:
What am I using to satisfy my soul?
Am I depending primarily on money, success, relationships, possessions, or recognition?
Or am I truly seeking Jesus?
Physical bread is necessary for the body, but Jesus is the Bread of Life.
And when our hearts are hungry for hope, purpose, forgiveness, truth, and eternal life, He invites us to come to Him.
Jesus is not simply offering us bread. He is offering us Himself.
Finding Spiritual Nourishment in Jesus
1. Identify the Areas of Spiritual Emptiness
“Now let’s bring this message closer to home.
Jesus said, ‘I am the Bread of Life.’ But what does that mean for you personally?
Take a moment and honestly examine your heart.
Are you spiritually tired?
Have you been praying less than you used to?
Have you stopped reading the Bible because life has become too busy?
Do you feel distant from God?
Perhaps you have achieved some of the things you once prayed for, but you still feel an emptiness inside.
Maybe you have people around you, but you still feel lonely.
Maybe you are successful on the outside, but inside you are searching for peace.
Maybe you are carrying disappointment, fear, guilt, or uncertainty that you have not brought completely to Jesus.
If any of these describe you, remember this:
You are not required to hide your hunger from Jesus.
You can come to Him exactly as you are.
Jesus does not invite us to pretend that we have everything together. He invites us to come to Him.
The question is not, ‘Do I have everything figured out?’
The question is, ‘Am I willing to come to Jesus?’
Take a moment right now and think about one area of your life where you feel spiritually empty.
It could be your faith.
Your family.
Your marriage.
Your purpose.
Your future.
Your emotions.
Your relationship with God.
Whatever it is, bring it to Jesus.
Don’t try to fill a spiritual hunger with things that can only provide temporary satisfaction.
Money cannot replace God’s presence.
Success cannot replace God’s purpose.
Possessions cannot replace God’s peace.
People cannot replace your relationship with your Creator.
Entertainment can distract you, but it cannot transform your soul.
Jesus says:
‘I am the Bread of Life.’
He is inviting you to come to Him.”
2. Turn Your Hunger Toward Jesus
“So what should we do when we recognize that we are spiritually hungry?
We turn toward Jesus.
Instead of running from God when we feel empty, we can run to Him.
Start simply.
Set aside a few minutes each day to pray.
Open your Bible and read a passage slowly.
Begin with the Gospel of John and pay attention to what it reveals about Jesus.
Talk to God honestly.
Tell Him where you are struggling.
Tell Him where you are hurting.
Thank Him for what He has already done.
Ask Him to strengthen your faith.
And then be willing to listen.
Spiritual nourishment is not about checking a religious box on a daily schedule. It is about developing a relationship with Jesus and continually depending upon Him.
Just as your body needs nourishment regularly, your spiritual life needs continual attention.
You don’t eat one meal and expect to be physically nourished forever.
In the same way, don’t let yesterday’s spiritual experience become your only source of strength today.
Come to Jesus again.
Read His Word again.
Pray again.
Trust Him again.
And when you fall, come back again.
The Bread of Life is still available.
His invitation still stands:
Come to Me. Believe in Me. Follow Me.
3. A Simple Prayer for Spiritual Nourishment
“If you feel spiritually empty today, I want to invite you to pray with me.
You don’t need perfect words. Simply open your heart to God.
Let us pray.
‘Heavenly Father,**
I come before You today recognizing that I need You.
There are areas of my life where I feel empty, tired, discouraged, or spiritually hungry.
I have sometimes looked to other things to give me the peace, satisfaction, and purpose that only You can provide.
Lord Jesus, You said, “I am the Bread of Life.”
So today, I come to You.
Fill my heart with Your presence.
Strengthen my faith.
Give me a deeper hunger for Your Word.
Teach me to seek You before I seek the things of this world.
Help me to trust You when I cannot see the way ahead.
Give me peace when I am anxious.
Give me strength when I am weak.
Give me hope when I am discouraged.
Forgive me for the times I have depended on myself instead of depending on You.
Help me to remain close to You through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience.
May Your Word become nourishment for my soul.
May Your presence become my greatest treasure.
And may my life point others toward You.
Jesus, You are the Bread of Life.
I choose to come to You.
I choose to trust You.
I choose to follow You.
In Jesus’ name,**
Amen.”
4. A Challenge for This Week
“Before you leave, I want to give you a simple challenge.
For the next seven days, spend a few intentional minutes each day with Jesus.
Read John 6:35.
Pray over it.
Think about what it means.
And ask yourself:
‘What am I hungry for that only Jesus can truly satisfy?’
Write your answer in a journal.
Then write this declaration:
‘Jesus is the Bread of Life. I will seek Him, trust Him, and depend upon Him.’
Let that truth become more than words.
Let it become the foundation of your daily walk with Christ.
Because the world offers many things that promise satisfaction.
But Jesus offers something the world cannot give:
true spiritual life, lasting hope, and eternal fellowship with God.
Come to Jesus.
Feed on His Word.
Trust His promises.
And allow the Bread of Life to nourish your soul.”
“What Does the Bread of Life Mean to You?”
“Before we close today’s message, I want to hear from you.
Jesus said:
‘I am the bread of life.’ — John 6:35
But what does that statement mean to you?
Take a moment and think about your own walk with Christ.
Has Jesus given you peace during a difficult season?
Has He given you strength when you felt weak?
Has He given you hope when you felt discouraged?
Has His Word guided you when you didn’t know which direction to take?
Or perhaps Jesus has met you in a season when you felt spiritually empty and reminded you that you were never alone.
I want to hear your story.
Tell us in the comments:
“What does the Bread of Life mean to you?”
And here’s another question:
“How has Jesus satisfied your spiritual hunger?”
Your answer doesn’t have to be long. Even a few words can encourage someone else watching this video.
You could simply write:
‘Jesus gives me hope.’
Or:
‘Jesus gives me strength when I am weak.’
Or:
‘Jesus has given me peace in difficult times.’
Your testimony may be exactly what another person needs to hear today.
Someone reading this article may be struggling silently.
Someone may be questioning their faith.
Someone may feel forgotten, discouraged, or spiritually empty.
And your comment could remind them that Jesus still satisfies hungry hearts.
So don’t just read and leave.
